Description
This 108 Chenrezig thangka is considered holy and is used by practitioners as a tool for meditation. The figure, Chenrezig, is often shown with four arms and two hands bowed in prayer, clutching a mala, a lotus, and a diamond that grants wish. There are 108 tiny representations of various facets of Chenrezig around the main image. In Buddhism, the number 108 has profound spiritual meaning, as it symbolizes worldly aspirations and mantras.
This means that Chenrezig (Avalokiteśvara), the Bodhisattva of Compassion, takes on 108 various forms to meet the wants, desires, and situations of all living things.
So, the number 108 is a symbol of being able to adapt to everything. It means that compassion isn’t a one-size-fits-all idea; it’s a powerful, active energy that can take any form it needs to in order to ease suffering.
The thangka is often utilized during ceremonies or instruction and is set on altars.

The Chenrezig Thangka Ritual is a sacred Tibetan practice that involves worshipping and visualizing Chenrezig, the Bodhisattva of Compassion, as represented in a thangka. This ritual is significant in Tibetan Buddhism, as Chenrezig represents the compassion of all Buddhas. The ritual involves setting up an altar with the thangka as the central focus, purifying the area with incense and reciting prayers to dispel negative energy. The practitioner invokes Chenrezig by reciting traditional Tibetan mantras, such as Om Mani Padme Hum, which purifies the mind and cultivates inner peace. The visualization involves imagining Chenrezig in radiant form, symbolizing love, compassion, joy, and equanimity. The mantra is repeated, focusing on extending compassion and developing a deep inner compassion. The ritual concludes with prayers of dedication, allowing practitioners to connect deeply with Chenrezig and foster compassion in their hearts.
