Who is Bhaisajyaguru?
Bhaisajyaguru, or the Medicine Buddha, represents healing of the body, speech, and mind, and is the answer to ignorance, which is the cause of suffering. His iconography features a blue body made of lapis lazuli, monk’s robes, the lotus meditation posture, and gestures that stand for healing and blessing. He has a medicine bowl and sometimes a Haritaki fruit, which means full healing. He lives in the Pure Land of Lapis Lazuli, surrounded by a halo and bodhisattvas. The symbolism of Bhaiṣajyaguru teaches that wisdom and compassion are the only real ways to heal, and people say his mantra to protect themselves and ease their pain. Tibetan, Chinese, and Nepalese traditions all have different ways of showing art.
