Description

The Chenrezig statue gleams with a 24K mercury-gold coating, illuminating sacred spaces. Artisans showcase their detailed craftsmanship, using acrylic colors to enliven its features and adorning it with gemstones such as turquoise and coral. This statue embodies the devotion and skill associated with Chenrezig, also known as Avalokiteshvara, the Bodhisattva of Compassion in Buddhism.

This bodhisattva represents endless love and empathy. He promises to help all living beings find relief from suffering and chooses to delay his own enlightenment until everyone is free. Through this selfless vow, he demonstrates his dedication to helping others and establishes himself as an important figure in Buddhist philosophy.

In Nepali culture, Chenrezig—also called Chengrechi-Changrasi—forms an essential part of the country’s heritage. Stories describe how he appears in many forms, such as a bodhisattva or a teacher, and reaches people from all walks of life. He provides comfort, guidance, and protection to his followers through his caring presence. The teachings and stories of Chenrezig inspire people to practice compassion, selflessness, empathy, forgiveness, and unconditional love. These values play a central role in both Buddhist and Nepali traditions, making devotion to Chenrezig a key path to enlightenment and freedom.

The mantra “Om Mani Padme Hum” directly links to Chenrezig and holds great importance in Tibetan Buddhism because it expresses his compassionate nature. Buddhists recite and revere this mantra more than most others, highlighting Chenrezig’s significance to countless spiritual seekers.

The Chenrezig statue is a significant ritual in Tibetan Buddhism that holds the transformative power to cultivate compassion, loving-kindness, and spiritual wisdom.

The ritual involves clearing the area, creating a sacred space, and setting up offerings in a circle around the statue. Common offerings include water bowls, flowers, incense, lighting options, and fruits and food. The ceremony begins with lighting candles or lamps to symbolize illumination of the path to enlightenment.

Invoking Chenrezig is done by reciting prayers or chants, such as “I take refuge in the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha. May all beings benefit from my practice.” The mantra of compassion is recited while focusing on Chenrezig, with a mala (prayer beads) used to count the repetitions. Visualizing compassionate light emanating from the statue fills the heart and extends to all beings.

The ceremony concludes with dedication and closing, with prostrations performed to show respect and gratitude. The daily use of the Chenrezig statue includes morning practice, morning reflection, and evening reflection. These practices aim to cleanse the mind from impurities, promote compassion, and encourage spiritual wisdom.
