Using offering bowls is a fundamental practice in Tibetan Buddhism. Water offerings, also referred to as ‘yonchap’ in Tibetan, are a widely practiced form of offering at Buddhist shrines. In Tibetan culture, it is customary to begin the day by offering water, this practice involves making offerings to Buddhas and Bodhisattvas in all four directions.
Buddhist practices place great emphasis on the significance of seven bowls of water, symbolizing the utmost purity of the Buddhas. It is believed that offering any pure and precious substance to the Buddhas aids in accumulating merits, achieving spiritual attainments, and establishing the conditions for obtaining a Buddha’s body – a pleasant, healthy, and charming body that attracts others to the Dharma. Water offerings are one of the simplest ways to create merit for the success of our spiritual practice. Offering water doesn’t cause anyone to feel lost, as it is typically considered abundant and widely accessible. This further develops our generosity, empowering us to freely give other substances in the future, just as we do water.
Making water offerings is a simple way to alleviate poverty and bring riches into the world.
