The Phurba ritual is a very important one in Tibetan Buddhism, it is closely associated with a ceremonial dagger called a phurba. This is a Ritual Khanda (dagger), it is not used as a conventional weapon but as a tool used by Lamas, shamans, and practitioners during ceremonies to subdue negative energies or malevolent spirits, or to cut through obstacles. The phurba is very important, it is the power to overcome negative forces and ignorance and at the same time, stability and balance.
Essential Elements of the Phurba Ceremony:
The dagger typically features three sides, representing the triumph over ignorance, desire, and hatred—key barriers to achieving enlightenment in Buddhism.
The blade is the emblem of the clarity of vision, it cuts through the false veils and the dangerous emotions.
This ritual involves special mantras, puja’s, and mudra’s, usually accompanied by fire puja’s or other elements, all with the purpose of invoking the power of the phurba for the specific intention of curing or protecting.
Practitioners also use the phurba in a ceremonial sense to “stab” the earth or effigy, symbolizing the control over negative forces or the grounding of spiritual energies.
The ceremony, which is performed by Tibetan shamans (who are sometimes Buddhist lamas) from the pre-Buddhist tradition of Bon, is rarely conducted.
The phurba is used for many things, from cleansing a space or person, to banishing evil spirits, to protecting one from negative forces. Sharp edge of the blade is its ability to cut through spiritual walls.
The triangular blade represents the ability to transcend the three poisons of ignorance, attachment, and aversion.
This idea applied is basically using and directing energy, using ferocious compassion to defeat both internal and external enemies and thus clear the path for spiritual liberation.
