The Padmasambhava Thangka ritual is a key practice in Tibetan Buddhism, particularly within the Nyingma school. Padmasambhava, known as the “second Buddha,” is celebrated for establishing Vajrayana Buddhism and hiding teachings for future generations. The Thangka serves as more than just an image; it acts as a medium for blessings and meditation. Key symbolic elements include a wrathful-compassionate gaze, Vajra, skull-cup, Khatvanga staff, and lotus hat, all embodying aspects of the guru’s wisdom. The main ritual associated with the Thangka is Guru Yoga, which aims to unite the practitioner’s mind with the guru’s wisdom.
This practice involves preliminaries like making offerings and generating Bodhichitta, along with invoking Padmasambhava through prayers, particularly the Seven-Line Prayer. Mantra recitation, especially OM AH HŪNG VAJRA GURU PADMA SIDDHI HŪNG, helps purify obscurations and accumulate merit. The ritual culminates in the visualization of Padmasambhava merging into light and blending with the practitioner’s consciousness, leading to non-dual meditation. The session ends with the dedication of merit for the enlightenment of all beings.
Additionally, Thangkas are used in empowerment ceremonies and communal rituals, marking a transformative journey towards recognizing the guru as a reflection of one’s own inherent awareness.
