Description
The Medicine Buddha wears an ornate five-leaf crown decorated with colorful jewel-like inlays. He also adorns himself with long earrings, necklaces, armlets, bracelets, and richly decorated robes. This royal look follows the artistic styles of Himalayan Buddhist sculpture, especially from Nepal and Tibet.
He extends his right hand in the varada mudra, a gesture of generosity and compassion, and gently holds the myrobalan stem, a sacred herb symbolizing the Buddha’s healing powers. He rests his left hand in his lap, holding a medicine bowl filled with healing nectar, representing the overcoming of illness, suffering, and spiritual challenges.
The artist crafted the sculpture from copper alloy and finished it with a bright, gold-like surface. Fine engravings and colorful inlays decorate the crown, jewelry, and robes. The smooth gold finish stands out against the detailed patterns, demonstrating the artist’s great skill.
The lotus throne displays a row of rounded lotus petals above an engraved base, symbolizing purity, enlightenment, and rising above worldly attachments. Every part of the sculpture, from its balanced shape and detailed face to the carefully crafted jewelry and lotus base, showcases the skill of Himalayan Buddhist artists.
This Medicine Buddha sculpture serves as a shrine figure, a meditation centerpiece, or a collector’s piece of sacred art. It represents healing, long life, wisdom, protection, and relief from suffering, making it both a meaningful spiritual symbol and a fine example of Buddhist metalwork.
