One of the most revered and exceptionally skilled Buddhist masters in Tibet is Guru Milerapa. Even now, his melodies about profound experiences continue to resonate with both the knowledgeable and the everyday listener.
In the early stages of his life, Guru Milarepa engaged in numerous wrongful acts, including the use of black magic and the unleashing of hailstorms. Guru Milarepa later felt regret for his past wrongdoings and ultimately discovered his esteemed and enlightened teacher, Marpa. Marpa subjected him to trials and hardships in order to assess his dedication to his guru and enthusiasm for practicing the teachings of dharma. Milarepa later affirmed the series of empowerments and essential Mahamudra teachings that he received from Guru Naropa.
Guru Milarepa dedicated six years to meditating on these tantric teachings in the wild and desolate mountains, ultimately achieving Vajradharahood during his lifetime. Typically, depictions depict Guru Milarepa in cotton clothing, seated on antelope skin in the Lalitasana posture. Guru Milarepa sports a meditation band. Typically, Guru Milarepa places his right hand on his ears, signifying that he is actively listening to the voices of beings from lower realms. Guru Milarepa embodies profound compassion for all sentient beings. Typically, his body showcases shades of blue or green.
Legend has it that during his meditation, Guru Milarepa subsisted solely on nettles for an extended duration, resulting in his skin taking on a greenish tint. Occasionally, his form takes on a golden hue to symbolize his insights.
