Description
In this Thangka, Milarepa is seen sitting on an animal skin while displaying a serene expression on his face. He is making a sign of listening with his right palm resting on his right ear while his left hand is holding a skull cup securely. The tranquil atmosphere that the cave provides, which is attractive to the practitioner, is created by the luscious green greenery and vibrant red flowers that surround it.
The thangka’s spiritual benefits are significant for viewers, as contemplation of Milarepa is believed to help facilitate inner peace and understanding, inspire dedication, humility, and diligence, and serve as a reminder of the possibility of awakening in this lifetime. It also encourages mindfulness and simplicity in daily life. Additional elements in the thangka include figures in the sky and in the lower right corner. A lineage master is depicted in the clouds, signifying the transmission of teachings from master to student, while a spiritual figure in golden robes on a lotus platform in the lower right illustrates the lineage keeper, highlighting the enduring legacy of Milarepa’s teachings. Ritual offerings at the bottom center of the artwork, which include bowls of water, precious items, incense, and food, express devotion and reverence towards enlightened beings, further enriching the iconography of this sacred thangka.
