The Green Tara ritual is a spiritual practice in Vajrayana Buddhism aimed at invoking the blessings of Green Tara. This revered figure embodies compassion, swift action, and freedom from fear. The practice goes beyond merely seeking Tara’s blessings; it also focuses on building a personal relationship with her. Practitioners are encouraged to take responsibility for navigating life’s obstacles while cultivating Tara’s enlightened qualities.
Green Tara, often referred to as the “Mother of Liberation,” is believed to respond quickly to prayers. The ritual involves several steps, including setting the scene, arranging the altar, and incorporating a Thangka or mandala depicting Tara. Green items, such as fabric, flowers, or candles, are used to symbolize Tara’s energy.
Personal preparation for the ritual may include cleansing one’s hands and face or participating in a ritual bath. During the invocation of Green Tara, practitioners offer heartfelt prayers seeking refuge in the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha while invoking her compassionate energy. Generosity and appreciation are also essential, expressed through symbolic gifts and verses that celebrate Tara’s virtues.
The chanting of Green Tara’s mantra “ OM TARE TUTTARE TURE SVAHA” serves as a powerful tool for focusing on her attributes and envisioning her luminous presence. Practitioners can make individual appeals by offering personal prayers to Tara for support in overcoming fears and challenges. Finally, the practice concludes with a period of silent reflection, promoting tranquility and compassion.
