The sculpture depicts Nagarjuna in the lotus position, exuding calm and wisdom. The careful attention to detail reflects inner peace, while the patterns on the robes showcase local artistic traditions. Nagarjuna’s hands form a mudra, which stands for teaching and blessings. Behind him, a detailed hood of serpents stands out. This feature, inspired by Buddhist stories, symbolizes the protection offered by Naga deities, especially the Naga king Muchalinda, who shielded the Buddha from the rain. In Tibetan and Mahayana Buddhism, many rituals and practices focus on statues of Acharya Nagarjuna, who founded the Madhyamaka school. Nagarjuna is known for recovering and sharing important Buddhist scriptures. According to legend, the Perfection of Wisdom Sutras, which explain the idea of “emptiness” (shunyata), were kept safe in the world of the nagas, or serpent-like water spirits. It is said that Nagarjuna traveled there to bring back these texts. He is often shown with seven serpents above him, which is why he is called the “Protector of the Nagas.”
Some rituals connected to Nagarjuna include the following:
- Consecration Rituals: These involve placing a Nagarjuna statue, adding sacred mantras and prayers, and then performing a special ceremony to consecrate it.
- Buddha Nageshvaraja: This blue-skinned deity, known as the “King of the Nagas,” is associated with Nagarjuna. Rituals for Nageshvaraja aim to purify negative karma, balance environmental energies, and call for rain. His mantra is: TAYATHA TATHAGATE BHAGAWAN-NAGA-RAJESWARA ADHISTHANA ADHISTHITE SOHA.
