Description
Artisans create the statue’s oxidized copper finish using traditional chemical treatments. This process forms a dark patina that enhances the intricate carvings and protects the copper, inviting closer examination and revealing the depth of craftsmanship.
The double lotus base, a key highlight, features two tiers of lotus petals—important symbols in Himalayan Buddhist art. The base represents spiritual purity and the promise of enlightenment, as the lotus rises above muddy waters. The upward and downward petals further deepen the statue’s visual and spiritual impact.
Newari Master Artists from the distinguished Shakya clan of Patan, Nepal, handcraft the statue using ancient lost-wax techniques and simple tools. Their skill and devotion are evident in each delicate motif, reflecting generations of artistry.
In terms of iconography, Amitabha sits in the double lotus (vajrasana) posture, radiating meditative stability. Hands in the dhyana mudra symbolize spiritual attainment, while the alms bowl represents compassion and mindful generosity. Revered as the Buddha of “Infinite Light,” Amitabha guides souls toward peace and enlightenment, a theme this sculpture eloquently captures.
