Gautama Buddha was born in the year 543 B.C. in the region of northern India. He was a prince of the strong Sakya tribe. During his youth, he was surrounded by luxury, and when he saw a man who was penniless, a corpse, and an ascetic, he was horrified into contemplating on the status of man in the world. In his pursuit of the truth, he gave up his fortune and his family in order to pursue his goals. As a result of his years of self-denial and meditation, he reached a profound understanding and came to be recognized as the Buddha, which literally translates to “The Enlightened One.”
