This picture features a Tibetan Buddhist thangka painting of Green Tara (Sgrol-ma Ljang-gu), one of the most revered figures in Tibetan Buddhism. Here are some key elements to help you recognize the artwork and understand its significance:
– Green Tara is depicted sitting on a lotus throne with her right leg outstretched, symbolizing her readiness to assist those in need.
– Her right hand is in the varada mudra, which represents kindness and the act of granting wishes. – In her left palm, she holds a blue lotus (utpala), symbolizing wisdom and purity that emerge amidst suffering.
– Above her are likely the five Buddhas, representing the Five Dhyani Buddhas: Vairocana, Akshobhya, Ratnasambhava, Amitabha, and Amoghasiddhi. Each Buddha signifies a different aspect of enlightenment.
– The gold details in the painting highlight her magnificence and suggest an open and wise mind.
– The figures at the bottom may represent White Tara (on the left) and a musician deity or dakini (on the right), illustrating her connections to compassion and joyful activities.
– The Tibetan lettering surrounding the image likely contains a mantra or invocation, such as “Om Tare Tuttare Ture Soha,” which is Green Tara’s sacred mantra that calls upon her for swift help and loving guidance.
- Hand-painted with intricate detail on cotton canvas.
- It depicts the Green Tara, a revered bodhisattva who symbolizes protection and the swift removal of obstacles.

The Green Tara Thangka ritual is an important Buddhist practice that centers on the beloved figure of Green Tara, who is a saint known for her kindness and speedy help. Setting up an altar, cleaning the area, calling on Green Tara with chants, and picturing her with a green light are all parts of the rite. People also say prayers for protection and kindness, make gifts of different kinds, and dedicate honour to the well-being of all living things. At the end of the rite, there is a prayer of thanksgiving and a visualization of Green Tara fading into nothingness, which represents how everything changes. People see this routine as a spiritual practice that can be done alone or with a group. It is thought to protect, clear the way, and encourage kindness and understanding in daily life.
