Vajradhara is a key aspect of the Highest Yoga Tantra and is a ritual performed by advanced practitioners and lamas during empowerments, initiations, and sādhanā (meditative practices).
The purpose of a Vajradhara ceremony is to receive or offer empowerment (wang) from Vajradhara, meditate on the union of wisdom and method, purify obscurations, and receive blessings and lineage transmissions within a tantric context.
Mantra recitation is common, and specific mantras are given during the empowerment. The offering rituals (puja) involve making ritual cakes, as well as offerings of incense, light, water, flowers, and food. These offerings symbolize the act of giving up ego and desire in exchange for realization. Meditation on the empty nature of all appearances culminates in dissolving into Vajradhara, and the practitioner eventually lets go of the visualization to rest in non-conceptual awareness. During the ritual, a lama may visualize themselves as Vajradhara, the figure who transmits tantric empowerments.
