Virupa is a pivotal figure in Vajrayana Buddhism, linked to important rituals and teachings, particularly within the Sakya school, where he is the source of the Lamdre (“Path with Its Result”) system. Key ritual elements connected to him include:
- Among these, Ganachakra is a significant Tantric Feast Offering involving sacred offerings, often with substances normally prohibited, aimed at generating bliss and wisdom. It is said that Virupa’s engagement in this practice led to his expulsion from Nalanda Monastery.
- In addition, the core teachings of Virupa focus on the Hevajra Tantra, with his Vajra Verses serving as crucial instructions for rituals and empowerment.
- Furthermore, prior to his enlightenment, Virupa completed a twelve-year-long mantra recitation dedicated to Vajra Varahi, underscoring the importance of mantra as a core practice.
- Another central aspect of his practice was Deity Yoga, particularly the Chakrasamvara Tantra. This led to his enlightenment through visualizing oneself as a deity.
To further illustrate Virupa’s ongoing influence, a devotional prayer attributed to Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo invokes Virupa’s blessings to dispel obstacles and achieve spiritual powers (siddhis).
